Product Story & Description

The Name: "Ya Zhu"

"Ya Zhu" means "elegant bamboo." Bamboo is one of the "Four Gentlemen" of Chinese art, prized for standing straight, bending without breaking and staying green through winter. The Song Dynasty poet Su Shi famously wrote that he would rather eat without meat than live without bamboo, for without it a person grows coarse. This teapot carries that ideal of refined, upright character.

Design & Craftsmanship

The body steps out from an upright upper wall to a wide, rounded lower section, giving the pot a stable, layered profile. Both the spout and the handle are modeled as bamboo stalks with raised joints, and the lid is topped with an openwork knob in the form of a scholar's rock. One side is incised with a spray of bamboo, accompanied by the maker's inscription and seal.

The Clay: Zhu Ni

Zhu Ni (along with the broader Hong Ni family) is known for its delicate texture and striking appearance. After firing, it features a beautiful color that ranges from bright orange to deep red. When showered with hot water, the clay beautifully comes alive, quickly flushing to a vibrant, bright red that sometimes exhibits a subtle, wandering purple glow.

Zhu Ni is characterized by its high density and low porosity. Because of this dense structure, the clay does not absorb the tea's fragrance. Instead, it acts to lock in and retain the delicate aromas of the tea leaves.

Due to its exceptional ability to preserve fragrance, Zhu Ni is perfectly suited for highly aromatic teas. We especially recommend it for light oolongs (such as Tieguanyin and Dancong) and Pu'er.
